Somali Bureau of Standards
SoBS is the only quality infrastructure institution in Somalia. Established in 2020, it serves as the national body for standardization, metrology, testing, certification and conformity assessment, mandated by the Standards and Quality Control Act.
SoBS is headquartered in Mogadishu and operates under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Resources. The institution actively participates in regional and international standards bodies including ISO, ARSO, SMIIC, Codex Alimentarius and the WTO to align Somali standards with international best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Standardization
Development, publication and promotion of Somali National Standards in all sectors of the economy.
Metrology
Ensuring accuracy of measurement instruments and traceability of measurements to international standards.
Certification
Provision of product, system and personnel certification services against Somali and international standards.
Import Inspection
Inspection of imported goods at all Ports of Entry to prevent non-compliant products from entering the Somali market.
Market Surveillance
Monitoring of products in the Somali market to identify and address safety hazards and non-compliance.
International Cooperation
Active membership in ISO, ARSO, SMIIC, Codex and WTO/TBT agreement implementation.
